A sneaky preview

Hey, check it out. This is the new Scary Azeri culture clash Q&A column in the MagAZine I was telling you about, due out in November.

I was going to wait till the magazine is out to put it up on the blog, but the editor said it was OK.

She said we were not exclusive.

In other circumstances, that would be hurtful. But in this one, it just means I can share a sneaky preview with you and see what you think.

Be kind, because:

a) It is nice to be a kind person.
b) It is my first ever attempt so I will get better as I practice. (I think?)

Hope you can read it, if you click on the picture it should enlarge. And thank you to those who sent me the very first scary questions! Much, much appreciated!

  1. LOL! This column reminds me the one in OC Weekly called "Ask The Mexican!" (http://www.ocweekly.com/authors/gustavo-arellano), where Gustavo Arellano tackles tough cross-cultural questions. You may find it helpful!
Here's a sample question from that column: "My friend and I were wondering why Mexican girls are so beautiful when they are teenagers, then over the years, they become fat, old bags?". The answer is here...

  6. Love it. And well done. You know, lithuanians are very intrusive and after 13 years in the UK, i roll my eyes when they ask "so, how much do you earn?". But they just want to know so they can compare you. Being nosey it's our national sport.

  8. Sabina,
You would not even have to buy it, I believe it is free in Baku, in all those expat locations. I assume you are abroad? I am sure at some point they will make an online version. Watch this space!

  9. Salam Necessen ScaryAzeri! I am beyond happy to have found your blog. I've recently fallen in love with an Azerbaijani man. He's twenty years old and oh so wonderful. I have so much to learn, for I've only known him for 2 months. Reading your blog with help me... but I was also wondering if I could possibly have more personal conversations with you. Im no creep. Just completely in love with anyone who is Azeri <3 I can proudly say I know the numbers until ten, the alphabet and I could tell you how old I am :)I would really enjoy your opinions of my blog. I haven't written much. I suppose Im trying to find my voice. But an opinion would be great nevertheless. You seem very interesting.. It's pretty badass an Azeri likes Muse :))

  11. Hello AIDLTSSQ: Nice to meet you! If you want to talk, please do email me on
    scaryazeri@gmail.com

and I will be happy to have a chat!

As long as you are not a 60+ year old man who takes pride in knowing his alphabet and counting to 10! :)

    That indeed, would be worrying.

  16. Great job! it's nice to have this cross cultural conversation, hopefully will reduce some misunderstanding between the east and the west :-)) Another thing I've been thinking since I read "Caspian Rain" by Gina Nahai that how in our culture (middle eastern and russian alike) it is a taboo to talk about diseases and defects people may have, like in that novel where the Persian family hid from everyone that their son was inheritantly deaf out of fear that his sisters will stay "on the shelf", and the boy got hit by a car and killed. And how westerners, at least in the US, like to tell anyone who will listen about their health issues, and such things as breast cancer, hysteroctomy are discussed easily in public. People don't worry about becoming outcasts or not finding a partner if they have even serious health issues.

  17. The column is excellent and I am sitting with the second issue in front of me, hot off the press!!!! It is a free magazine - available to pick up all over the city. It is written in English, with a small section in Azeri. Please, if you have any questions that you would like help with, email Scary Azeri and if you have any queries regarding the magazine, please email me at: lynn@az-magazine.com

  18. Hey, I've just read the article. It was fun, but I would strongly disagree with you on "Azeri's overall, are not that sensitive to personal questions or personal space". You are so wrong on this one!
